Republican Congresswoman calls Roe v Wade repeal a “victory for white life”

Mary Miller, a representative for Illinois, has called the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade a “victory for white life” whilst praising former president Donald Trump. The two were appearing at a “Save America” rally on Saturday (June 25th) when she made the staggering comments.

President Trump, on behalf of all the MAGA patriots in America, I want to thank you for the historic victory for white life in the Supreme Court yesterday.

Her comments were met with loud cheers from the Trump supporters in attendance at the rally.

During his term in the White House, Mr Trump appointed three republican judges to the Supreme Court, and all three - Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett - voted to overturn the landmark ruling which enabled women in all 50 states to access safe abortions. He has since said in an interview with Fox news that this result was a “decision made by God.”

Naturally the comments by Ms Miller have been met with extreme backlash, with many calling her a white supremacist, and expressing fears that this language - along with comments by the Supreme Court talking about looking at the rulings on contraception, same-sex marriage and interracial marriage - might see America returning to a time before the Civil Rights Movement. It is widely accepted that the overturning of this ruling will not stop abortions, it will simply stop safe access to them, and that this will hit women of colour the hardest, as they unfortunately make up a disproportionate percentage of the poorest Americans.

Ms Miller’s spokesperson claims she did not intend to say this ruling was a victory for white lives, that this was simply a case of “a mix up of words.”

This is not the first time Ms Miller has faced backlash of this kind. In a speech she gave in 2021 she quoted Adolf Hitler, stating “Hitler was right on one thing. He said ‘Whoever has the youth has the future.’” for which she faced calls for her resignation.

Ms Miller is running for re-election in Chicago’s 15th Congressional District.
