Dina Asher-Smith withdraws from Commonwealth Games with injury.

British runner Dina Asher-Smith has had to withdraw from next weeks Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, after an injury she picked up earlier this month at the World Championships didn’t heal in time.

Dina appeared at the World Championships in Eugene where she won bronze in the 200m, and was part of GB’s 4x100m relay team. It was during this race that she picked up - what was hoped at the time to be a cramp - but turned out to be a sprained hamstring.

The last Commonwealth Games were held on Australia’s Gold Coast in 2018, and Dina came away with a gold and a bronze medal. She was due to run the 100m and again be part of the 4x100m team.

However, Dina holds 3 European Championship titles, and with this years event in Munich coming up in just 3 weeks time, it’s important that her body is in the best condition it can be for her to defend them.

Speaking of her injury and withdrawal, Dina said:

Unfortunately, I’ve got a slight hamstring strain and won’t be ready to race next week at the Commonwealth Games. I love racing in front of a British crowd and was so excited to return to Birmingham, so I’m sad that I won’t be there.

Kelly Sotherton, Team England's team leader for athletics at the Commonwealth Games 2022, had this to say:

It's obviously really sad to lose Dina through injury, given her stature and standing as one of the best female athletes in the world. We know just how much she was looking forward to being part of Team England at a home Games in Birmingham. We wish Dina well with her recovery and hope to see her back on the track very soon, doing what she does best.

We wish Dina a speedy recovery and hope to see her back in top form next month.
